Q: What is this dust wiper seal, and what does it do?
A: This is a heavy-duty dust wiper seal (also called a scraper seal), designed for hydraulic cylinders (often excavator/construction equipment). It’s installed in the cylinder head to wipe dirt, mud, water, and debris off the piston rod as it retracts into the cylinder. This prevents contamination from entering the hydraulic system, protecting the main rod seals, bearings, and internal components from premature wear and damage.

Q: How long does a dust wiper seal typically last?
A: Under normal conditions with clean rods and proper installation, an NBR wiper seal can last 3,000–6,000 operating hours. PU seals, with their superior wear resistance, can last longer—often 6,000–10,000 hours—especially in harsh environments. However, if the rod is damaged or heavily contaminated, the seal may fail much sooner.

Q: Can I reuse an old wiper seal?
A: No, it is never recommended to reuse a dust wiper seal. Once the seal has been installed and run against the piston rod, it develops permanent wear, deformation, and lip damage. Even if it looks fine, it will not provide effective scraping performance when reinstalled, leading to contamination entering the cylinder. Always install a new wiper seal during every cylinder rebuild.
