Q:What material is it made of, and why is this chosen? 
A:  It’s usually made of filled PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) or a high-performance engineering plastic like nylon or POM. Sometimes it’s made of fabric-reinforced phenolic material for extra strength. These materials are chosen because they have very low friction, excellent wear resistance, and good dimensional stability under pressure. They don’t scratch the cylinder bore and can handle the side loads common in hydraulic cylinders. 

Q:How do these materials perform in different conditions?

A:Filled PTFE wear rings work well across a wide temperature range (-40°C to +150°C) and with almost all hydraulic fluids. They have very low friction, which helps the cylinder move smoothly even at high speeds. Nylon/POM versions offer good impact resistance and low cost for standard-duty applications, though they can absorb moisture in some cases. Fabric-reinforced phenolic rings are used in heavy-duty, high-pressure cylinders where maximum strength and stability are needed.

Q:What causes these rings to fail early?
A: The most common causes are installation damage, like cracking or over-stretching the ring during assembly. Contaminated hydraulic fluid can wear down the ring quickly, and excessive side loads or misalignment in the cylinder can cause uneven wear. Using the wrong material for the application (e.g., standard nylon in high-temperature conditions) can also lead to premature failure.
