  • It Stops the Seal from "Rolling" (Spiral Failure)When a transmission clutch piston strokes forward, it exerts massive friction on the seal.The O-ring Problem: Because an O-ring is perfectly round, it wants to roll like a wheel inside its groove when the piston moves. As it rolls, different sections of the ring twist at different rates. This severe twisting cuts and tears the rubber internally, causing it to snap. This is known as spiral failure.The D-ring Solution: A D-ring has a wide, completely flat base on one side and a rounded lip on the other. You install the flat base so it sits tightly against the bottom of the machined groove. This flat footprint anchors the seal, physically blocking it from twisting or rolling when the piston slides past it.
  • It Resists High-Pressure "Extrusion";When hydraulic oil pressure hits a rubber seal, it forces the rubber toward the tiny clearance gap between the moving metal parts.

A: Common causes include installation damage like pinching or scratching, contaminated hydraulic fluid causing abrasion, excessive pressure leading to extrusion, and surface defects on mating components that wear the ring.

Q: How long do these seal rings typically last?
A: Under normal conditions with clean fluid and proper installation, high-quality PTFE or PU seal rings can last 3,000–6,000 operating hours, depending on the application and cycle rate.

Q: Can I reuse old seal rings?
A: No, it is never recommended to reuse these seal rings. Once installed and exposed to operating conditions, the rings develop permanent wear, deformation, or surface damage. Even if they look fine, they will not form a reliable seal when reinstalled, leading to leaks or pressure loss. Always use new seal rings during every rebuild.
