Q: What is this dust wiper seal, and what does it do?

A: This is a heavy‑duty hydraulic cylinder dust wiper seal, often called a scraper seal. It’s installed in the cylinder head to wipe dirt, mud, water, and debris off the piston rod as it retracts into the cylinder. This prevents contamination from entering the hydraulic system, protecting the main rod seals, bearings, and internal components from premature wear, scoring, and damage.

Q: Can I reuse an old dust wiper seal?

A: No, it is never recommended to reuse a dust wiper seal. Once the seal has been installed and run against the piston rod, it develops permanent wear, deformation, and lip damage. Even if it looks fine, it will not provide effective scraping performance when reinstalled, leading to contamination entering the cylinder. Always install a new wiper seal during every cylinder rebuild.

Q: Can I reuse a wiper seal if I disassemble the cylinder?
A: No. Once the seal has been installed and run against the rod, the lip has been permanently worn and shaped to the rod’s surface. Reusing it will not provide a tight seal, and it may even crack during removal/installation. Always use a new wiper seal for every rebuild.
