A: What you are describing is a standard rotary shaft oil seal (often called a lip seal).You are completely right about its structure: it looks like a simple rubber ring from the outside, but it actually has a hidden, rigid steel skeleton molded directly inside of it, along with a small steel spring.

Because these two parts do completely different jobs, they are made of very different grades of metal and rubber depending on where they are used on the machine.The Inside Metal: The Skeleton and the Spring,The metal parts give the seal its mechanical strength so it doesn't collapse or slip.The Internal Case (The Skeleton): Molded deep inside the rubber is a rigid ring made of Carbon Steel (or Stainless Steel for wet/corrosive environments).Why it's there: Without this steel casing, the seal would be too floppy. The steel skeleton provides the structural stiffness needed so you can hammer or press the seal tightly into a metal housing bore without it warping. It ensures a tight, permanent "press fit."

The Garter Spring: If you look at the backside of the sealing lip, you will see a tiny, coiled wire spring wrapped in a circle. This is also made of Carbon Steel or Stainless Steel.

Why it's there: As the rubber ages, heats up, or wears down, it naturally loses its grip. The garter spring acts like a constant rubber band, applying continuous, gentle pressure to keep the rubber lip pressed firmly against the spinning shaft.
